Diabetic Readings

What is an A1C?

Your A1c result shows your average blood glucose (or blood sugar) level for the last 3 months, so its different from the test you do at home with a glucose meter. This test is also known as the glycated hemoglobin test.

Goal values:

  • Normal adult less than 6.0%
  • Diabetic adult less than 7.0%

What are good blood glucose levels?

Both you and your physician will decide what your target blood sugar levels should be.

For people without diabetes, according to experts, blood sugar levels should be:

  • Between 70 and 120mg/dL

For people with type 2 diabetes:

  • Fasting (not eating for a period of time): up to 130mg/dL

  • After meals: less than 180mg/dL

Converts A1c to average blood sugar and vice versa
