Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease that occurs when the insulin producing beta cells within the pancreas are gradually destroyed and eventually fail to produce insulin. This makes the blood sugar level very high and causes health problems that can damage the eyes, kidneys, nerves or heart. Type 1 diabetes can't be prevented. Physicians can't even tell who will get it and who won't.
